EBook Echoes of friendship ford comI really enjoyed this book Excellent Ms Worley has a very good style and a deep sense of storytelling The characters were heart felt and I appreciate how she took from family history. Echoes of Friendship pdf converter Worley Pauline BarclayFounder of Chill with a Book Awards 225 What is so rewarding about this story is the weaving together of the past and present as it were a rope One strand is the adolescent Andy in the here and now his days threatened by his enemies who in a mix of violence and contempt aim to deepen the insecurity they sense he feels but whose misery is relieved by the friendship and affection he gets from a foreign exchange student in his form the other is Andy s great grandfather Matt as he experiences total war on the Western Front scared miserable deprived of any autonomy yet able to make friends with those he was meant to kill and who in turn were sent to kill him. Book Echoes of friendship village My own uncle my father s much older brother was killed in 1918 so I should feel closer to the second strand than the first but while I can distinctly recall what it was like to be persecuted at school in the later 1940s neither I nor any of us can have an idea no matter how many photographs we see or school visits are arranged of the sheer awfulness of life and death on the Western Front As there is no one alive now who was there we are wholly dependent on the creative imagination of others This author gives us what I d say is the best description of going over the top I ve ever read Not a line out of place and totally convincing A little later she writes a description of a night in a forward post a beautifully wrought description with not a false note and quite an unusual focus as Matt watches nature in the shapes of an owl and a fox go about its business in the squalor and destruction These descriptive passages and there are others I haven t mentioned illumine the fabric of this story The reader is entertained of course but also instructed and moved. Kindle Echoes of friendship Echoes of Friendship follows Andy s search for his great grandfather Matt s role in the First World War As he prepares for a school trip to the battlefields in France and Belgium and begins reading letters between Matt and his family it becomes clear that Matt s experiences and unlikely friendship with a German soldier have a parallel with Andy s friendship with German exchange student Sophe Inspired by Matt s bravery and Sophe s support Andy is able to overcome the relentless bullying he receives at school What the author really succeeds in is presenting the two sides of war This is done through the device of the split narrative as the narration alternates between the modern day and that war time As a result the reader can see how the view of the War we have now is framed through letters and photographs so we never fully appreciate the true suffering of the soldiers Though the contrast between the two explorations of war is interesting I couldn t help but feel that the chapters from Matt s point of view are vivid emotional and exciting than the modern day ones from Andy s. Echoes of Friendship kindle cloud I felt though it was a great strength of the novel how it educates the reader about the War by exploring life in the trenches and that it would be best received by readers in the age group 11 15 as Andy s experiences in school would be familiar to this age group I felt that Andy s character didn t match the age the author gives him he is said to be in year 10 but from his and his peers behaviour he seems younger perhaps in year 8 The descriptions and accounts of school life would certainly appeal and feel familiar to the younger reader I found it took too long for Andy to learn about Matt s relationship with Hans Muller and for him to meet Sophe I also thought the development of most of the relationships in the story are rushed and not as central to the plot as they should be perhaps due to the time we spend while Andy finds money for his trip and Matt s backstory which do not contribute to the main themes of friendship and bravery Once these chapters are out of the way the novel picks up pace and is both interesting and insightful Some other points Andy s caravan holiday was according to the plot eight years in the past but the characterisation of Andy then doesn t seem very different from how he is in the present I also didn t feel that for a main protagonist Andy was particularly likeable He comes across as a bit of a loner and the way he eavesdrops on his female friends conversations I found creepy He also seemed ungrateful complaining that his father gave him money rather than a present for Christmas even though we and he knows money is tight in the family Things like that make it hard to sympathise with his problems Finally I found some of the war time lingo needed explanation perhaps a glossary would have been helpful For example I had to Google the word squaddies which I first thought was a cheesy and childish name for the bullies Would the average young reader understand why they were called that 225
Andy s investigations into his great grandfather Matt s struggle for survival in the World War One trenches lead him to uncover a mystery why and how did Matt become friends with a German soldier A school trip is a chance to find out if he can find the money to go But Andy has struggles of his own in the shape of the Squaddies a gang of bullies determined to make his life a misery Can learning about the past and making an unexpected friendship of his own give Andy the courage to face up to them Echoes of Friendship.,
